  • The trailblazing Mobile Stroke Unit has been working the streets of Melbourne for nearly six years.
  • The team treats 12 times as many patients in the Golden Hour compared to standard hospital pathways.
  • While the fastest was just six minutes, on average, it takes 18 minutes from arrival to a patient receiving a CT scan in the back of the ambulance.
  • The MSU’s onset to needle time for thrombolysis is 84 minutes which is 83 minutes faster than the Australian metro hospital average.
  • A significant number of patients, after onboard diagnosis, are redirected past the nearest hospital for treatment at a comprehensive stroke centre. Patients receive surgical treatment hours earlier and valuable ambulance resources are freed up.
  • The model has inspired the Australian Stroke Alliance’s quest to take lightweight, portable and affordable brain imaging to all Australians, via road and aeromedical retrieval services.

In the first hour, three different pairs of researcher/lived-experience contributors will share some real-life examples of how to undertake ‘co-design’ (and some pitfalls to avoid). Tips and tricks and practical resources will be shared.

In the last half hour, the speakers will join in a panel conversation.

This is an interactive session for all conference attendees with opportunities to ask questions and learn from others participating. For lived-experience delegates it will build on Workshop 1. This session will also appeal to researchers wanting to learn more about co-design principles and get practical tips to improve how to involve those with lived experience in their research.
