Julie Bernhardt

Julie Bernhardt is a clinical researcher who has worked with stroke patients for over 35 years. Professor at The Florey Institute, Melbourne, Australia, she co-heads the Stroke Theme. A world leading rehabilitation trialist, she is Principal Investigator of international, early mobility trials (eg AVERT, AVERT DOSE) and has supported many investigator-initiated trials in rehabilitation and recovery. Julie led the NHMRC CRE in Stroke Rehabilitation, convened and led the first two international Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Roundtables to develop new research standards. These have culminated in development of the 500 strong International Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Alliance (ISRRA). She co-leads Australia’s first young stroke service project. Noted for her advocacy for meaningful inclusion of people with lived experience in research, Julie is also a strong advocate for Women in Science. Her contribution to stroke research, science advocacy and mentorship has been recognised by numerous awards, including an Order of Australia award in 2019 and 2020 investiture into the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science.
