Ken Butcher
Prof. Butcher is the Director of Clinical Neurosciences at the Prince of Wales Clinical School, University of New South Wales and Medical Director of the NSW Statewide Telestroke Service. Prior to 2019, he was a faculty member at the University of Alberta, where he was a Professor of Neurology (2006-18). Prof. Butcher completed his PhD concurrently with his MD at the University of Western Ontario (1997). He completed his Neurology Residency at the University of Alberta, followed by post-doctoral Fellowships in advanced stroke imaging and clinical trials in Melbourne and Sydney.
Prof. Butcher’s major clinical and research interests are in acute stroke care. He has designed and led multicenter randomized controlled trials in acute intracerebral hemorrhage as well as ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack patients. His active research projects include MRI as well as CT perfusion studies aimed at extending the time window for stroke thrombolysis.
Prof. Butcher has over 200 peer-reviewed publications. He currently holds grant funding from NSW Health (Senior Cardiovascular Scientist Award) and the Medical Research Futures Fund. Prof. Butcher has held personnel awards and grant-in-aid funding from the Alberta Heritage Innovates Health Solutions, Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. He previously held a Canada Research Chair in Cerebrovascular Disease and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, Northwest Territories (NWT) and Nunavut Professorship in Stroke Medicine.
